On an old wood garage door, the hardware gives up first

A wood door that sags, binds or shakes on its way up looks like a door near the end. Read it by its fasteners first. The panels are often sound, and what has worn out is the grip of the screws holding steel to wood.

Some of the wood doors on the oil-boom bungalows near Grand Boulevard still ride on the hardware they went up with. A door that old has made a lot of trips, and every one of them pulled at the same handful of screws.

What on an old wood garage door wears out before the wood?

The joints where steel meets wood. On an old wood sectional door the panels tend to outlast everything screwed to them, and the first real wear shows at the hinge and roller-bracket screws set into the stiles. That is where residential garage door repair on an older door spends most of its time, and it is why a door can feel finished while its wood is still good.

What loose fasteners look like from inside the garage:

  • A hinge leaf that shifts on the stile while the door travels
  • A gap between two sections that opens and closes as the door moves
  • A roller riding crooked in the track, or wobbling in its bracket
  • A door that comes down out of level and touches the slab on one side first
  • A shake through the face on every cycle, the rattle in the garage door noise lookup

None of those means a rotten panel. Each is a screw that has lost its grip, often in wood that is still solid.

Why do hinge screws keep pulling out of a wood garage door?

Each trip up and down levers every hinge against the stile it is screwed into. Over years of cycles the threads grind the wood around them to fiber, the hole gets wider than the screw, and the hinge starts to move. A longer screw driven into a wallowed hole holds for a season or so. It does not repair the joint.

The repair moves the load off the threads. A through-bolted hinge has a bolt running all the way through the stile, with the hinge on one face and a washer or backer plate on the other, so the wood is clamped instead of chewed. Where a stile has been drilled and re-drilled over the decades, the old holes get plugged and the hinge goes back into sound wood. Rollers and roller brackets are usually done in the same pass, since a worn roller drags and puts more twist into the new hinges.

You can often spot the worst hinge before anyone touches a tool. Look for a polished ring in the wood around a hinge leaf, worn shiny where the leaf has been sliding back and forth.

Leave the bottom corners alone. The hinge nearest the bottom bracket sits beside the lift cable, and that cable is under full spring tension.

Why does an old wood door sag and rack, and where does a strut come in?

On a two-car wood door the hinges toward the middle of each long section take much of the twist, and their screws tend to loosen first. Once they do, the middle of a section has nothing firm holding it to the section above. It drops, and the door goes out of square and racks in the track. A steel strut bolted across the inside face stiffens the section so it stays straight, as long as the wood will hold the bolts.

On a sagging wood door the order matters. The loose hinges get fixed first, so the section sits true, and the strut goes on after. The wind-load and bracing guide covers the same steel for storm reasons.

What does a loose old wood door do to the springs and the opener?

A door that racks drags in its track, so the springs and the opener work against friction they were never set up for. The opener strains, and it can start reversing partway down for no reason you can see. Wood doors already sit at the heavy end, and a loose one shifts that weight around on every trip. If either part has started to fail, garage door spring repair or garage door opener repair belongs on the same visit as the hardware, so the door is balanced once, on tight hinges.

When is the wood itself finished, and not the hardware?

When the wood will no longer hold a fastener. Wood gone soft enough that a new bolt has nothing to clamp, a stile split along its length, or a panel coming apart in layers are failures of the wood, and new hinges do not fix any of them.

The bottom rail is usually where that starts, going soft where the bracket screws in, and the bottom bracket guide covers that corner.

One bad section on an otherwise sound door can be replaced. Wood sections are made to order rather than pulled from stock, and how a special-order wood section fits the schedule is worth knowing before you commit. When most of the sections are going soft or splitting, the hardware question is over, and it becomes a conversation about garage door replacement.

What does keeping an old wood door running cost?

There is no single figure for re-hardwaring a wood door. It depends on how many hinges, brackets and rollers need replacing and whether a strut goes on. The tune-up row, $80 - $150, is the floor of a hardware visit. A made-to-order wood section falls under the panel/section row at $250 - $800. Wood doors also land toward the top of the spring ranges, since they need heavier springs. Every row is on our garage door price list.

On these older doors, garage door repair in Ponca City starts at the fasteners, and a new door only comes up once the wood will not hold them.

Describe the door. We’ll put a price on paper.

Spring went off like a rifle shot? Opener hums but nothing moves? Door sitting crooked since the last windstorm? Two sentences is plenty - we’ll call back with a straight answer and a written number. Rather just talk? (580) 382-7992.

  • The number is on paper before the toolbox opens - parts, labor, and haul-away in one figure, not a "starting at" teaser
  • Name the symptom on the phone and we can usually tell you the likely part and its honest price range before anyone rolls
  • Your call stays in Kay County - it is never auctioned off to three strangers the way the big lead sites do it
